Clatter

Well, it’s official: the leader of the Democratic Party has pardoned his son and simultaneously given up the moral high ground. In doing so, I believe that the party may have just declared, “if we can’t beat Trumpism by telling Americans the truth, we have no choice but to sink to their level.”

Yikes! What bullshit! “Say it ain’t so, Joe!”

The greatest fear many of us have is that we will see a dictatorship in our country. I think that there’s another more likely outcome: we will lose faith in ourselves, compromise our values and fight evil with more evil.

I hope I’m wrong. I would rather have the MAGA movement burn itself out with internal chaos so that we can return to the brilliant liberal democracy we’ve enjoyed for many decades. I’d rather know that Joe was just protecting his son, but I’m not sure.

I was listening to a contemporary historian quoting a 14th century historian who said that empires don’t usually fall due to military conflicts or economies. Instead, they collapse because of psychological reasons and a crisis of values.

There’s a great clatter around us these days. Hang on.
