This far into the new school year, we have ramped up very slowly, energetically and logistically. Translation: we’re still hanging out more than working.
Beginning this week, though, things get busier and the following week (the one that was supposed to be our first after the Southwest trip), we are traveling a bunch and playing lots of gigs in Westchester and Long Island.
Can you say “rocket launch”?
The time off has not been wasted. My morning practice of yoga and strength training is paying dividends and Beth and I have enjoyed lots of long walks, good conversations, watched some good TV and read a bunch of books.
Currently, I’m reading Robert B. Parker’s novels featuring his wisecracking PI, Spenser. He’s one of my favorite heroes and Parker’s dialogue is unmatched in the genre. The original series is 40 books and I’ve also got another dozen written after Parker’s death by Ace Atkins and Mike Lupica.
I could not imagine life without reading. It’s not as exciting as music or a few other sensory experiences, but I would put a long day with a good novel at the top of my list when it comes to peaceful activities.
There’s not much else to report. We are still sorting through various retirement plans, options that might kick in in a few years and others that would see us doing what we’re doing for as long as the work is here and our interest in it remains. At present, I’m still happy working with kids, teachers and grateful to the gentleman who help us get work. I’m a lucky fellow and I have few complaints that an hour or two of a book, a tasty snack and a great partner won’t cure.
