I like the campground where we are staying. I’m happy that we rethought our first choice, searched for a better park and canceled the existing reservation. This cost us $250, but listen – we are in one place for 30 days and it’s important to like it. It’s not the first time we’ve bounced out of a campground to take care of ourselves.
The new place has some amenities that are already making a big difference to me. Chief among them is a pool. There’s just something about water that soothes my soul.
When I was a boy, we used to visit my grandparents in Miami Beach every summer. Other than the occasional horrible sunburn, this was a great place to be a kid. My grandparents spoiled us and Craig and I spent hours upon hours enjoying simple stuff like riding up and down the elevators, playing Skee Ball at Adventureland, learning how to play ten-card gin with my Nana Frances and swimming, swimming, swimming in their pool.
This place has one other unique benefit we’ve never experienced – there are no transient campers. One month is the shortest reservation one can make and 90% of the 200+ campsites are occupied by seasonal campers (folks who pay a yearly fee for their spot). This results in a very high level of people who return year after year and know one another well. Most of the folks we have met have been coming back for years, some for more than 40 summers.
As you’d expect, the weekends are full of people and activities. Tonight, for example, there’s a the equivalent of a block party on our row and a band playing at the pavilion next to the pool. The weekend is not ideal for those seeking peace and quiet!
During the week, though, a sizable amount of folks go home to work, so I imagine we will be with the retirees and the young moms with their children Monday through Friday.
I’ll take some photos so you can see the place. Until then, I hope that your summer is off to a good start.
Congrats to our friend, Blake, who is enjoying his first month as a traveler.
