The Elephant in the Room

I avoid political commentary in this space because ya’ll can get your fill many other places. “Beth and Scott’s Adventure” is about the journeys we take, the people we meet and the inner transformative experiences that take place along that path.

But I would feel incredibly dishonest if I did not mention the proverbial elephant in the room – what’s going on in Minneapolis and, more broadly, how we as a country are being subjected to aggression by our own government. I’m sad, angry and scared.

Beth and I, like many of you, are wondering what we can do, so I would like to make an offering I’m following myself: to get involved locally now because what’s happening in Minnesota could be coming to our cities, too.

If you are in a red state, please contact your Senators and Congressional representatives to have them vote against further funding of Homeland Security, ICE and the border patrol until such time that the leaders of those agencies stop their unconstitutional activities.

And if you are in a blue state, please be prepared to join with your neighbors to protest against ICE if and when they come to your city. Organizations like Indivisible are coordinating online trainings to teach us how to safely advocate for social justice for our fellow human beings. Taking videos, for example, is a crucial part of documenting any abusive behaviors you might witness.

It doesn’t have to take a lot of our time or risk to our safety, but it does make a difference when we call our representatives, show up for events and, of course, vote for people who will change the direction of current events.

As is often chanted at protests…

“Show me what democracy looks like!“

Thanks for listening and thanks for considering how you might help. Past movements prove that if we all do a little bit, a lot of good will come of it.
