Lennon and the Owls

This week we are in Lynbrook, NY, home of the Owls. I know this because we worked in three elementary schools writing songs with 4th and 5th graders who have the Owl as their mascot.

Our goal – a new assignment for us – was to teach three schools in three days about John Lennon, his highest values of love and kindness and record new versions of his song, Real Love. And we did it!

Sometimes (and today is one of those times) I am amazed how Beth and I can operate, create and keep our heads with a kind of pressure that would have driven me nutty twenty years ago. Moreover, it would have caused me to drink, shop or numb out, to project my emotions on to others or think, “I can’t wait until this is over!”

Those days are behind me and I’m thankful.

We don’t do it alone. The two of us have therapists, coaches, non-profits, ACA groups, friends and practices that keep us serene. This week, for example, I have 3 phonecalls with fellow ACA travelers, a therapy session, daily discussions with Beth and I’m practicing yoga, breath work, prayer and meditation every morning.

Oh, and I will certainly enjoy some ice cream.

I don’t pretend to not feel the stress. My body is carrying some of the anxiety that goes with creating a new song and recording it every day and doing so in front of 100 children, teachers, district administrators, reporters and a local tv station. It’s a weight.

Fortunately, though, Lynbrook has an awesome staff supporting us and the students. Theatre Within, the organization that’s sponsoring us has provided us with an onsite photographer, videographer/typist and an Airbnb to crash in when the day is done. Energetically, logistically and spiritually I have what I need to succeed.

We also have 32 years of experience operating under these circumstances. Beth and I have created around 550 songs which means that writing a new one is like cooking dinner for a chef. Its just what we do.

Still, I will be VERY happy to return Sullivan, our country home. Long Island is super supportive of the arts and artists, but it’s a hectic place to be if you’re a country mouse.

I’m not complaining. We are working A LOT and that’s allowed us to travel, save and feel safer. It’s a small portion of the world that loves their work, enjoys some financial security and lives in a safe, healthy environment. I know that am blessed.

Our afternoon ended with 7 dedicated people discussing the work we all did on behalf of the children of Lynbrook. The superintendent of schools and his key staff came to all three sessions and there were big smiles and congratulations in acknowledgment of our shared triumph. Now, that’s a day and a life to celebrate.

Happy 84th Birthday, John. Your music and your spirit are alive and well in the land of the Owls.
